Welcome to the 2nd Semester at Walnut Hill!
OUR FOCUS THIS YEAR IS IMPROVING OUR UNDERSTANDING- COMPREHENSION AND CRITICAL THINKING
THIS IS A PROCESS THAT STUDENTS ARE ENGAGED IN DAILY
Everyday your student is having many opportunities to listen to passages and to read passages. During the time that they are being read to or reading on their own, we are checking on your child's understanding by asking questions and then teaching more.
Some of the questions are easily located and shared, we call these 'Right There Questions'. Other questions explore the vocabulary, the text structure and the author's craft, those are the How the Story was Crafted Questions. Then we get to the questions that go to answering, 'What does the story mean to me?' Here students are using higher level thinking: Inferring, Synthesizing, Making Connections and Predicting. When their thoughts are ready your students engage in Conversation that respects their thoughts and the thoughts of others.
We have now gone from finding 'Right Answers' to now hearing 'Varying Answers' demonstrating the ability to share our thoughts and provide reasons for our thinking. And at the same time, being able to listen to other's thoughts and asking them to provide their reasons for that point of view. A Community of Learners ultimately getting to the Question: What does this passage that was read to me or that I read inspire me to do?
Join us in our journey to strengthen our students and your child's thinking. By the sharing of their thoughts with others and you at home in respectful ways. Tell us about how you are engaging your student at home in this pursuit and we will share with you what we are doing here at Walnut Hill.
